13. Aidan Knight. “Fighting Against Your Lungs.” 2010. Victoria, BC.
I remember seeing Aidan perform solo at a bunch of coffee shops around town while I was still studying at UVIC. & I remember being impressed thinking, “wow, this guy is really good” but I was never given the opportunity to latch onto the music. He plays very gentle, beautiful arrangements that demand a certain amount of attention that the coffee shop audience somehow didn’t offer him. Last year I lived out of a van for 6 months while slowly making my way to Halifax. Every night before sleep I would tune my radio to CBC’s The Signal with Laurie Brown. I would sit on the edge of the bed and write letters or scribble down thoughts in a notebook. Laurie started playing Aidan’s music. I’m in Ontario parked beside a lake. I’m 4 provinces West of home where nobody knows where I am & all of a sudden I’m transported back to Victoria. I listened to The Signal every night, up to & including my Halifax stay & Aidan’s music followed me the whole way there.
